From the ripe young age of eleven years old, when girls were encouaged to dream of husbands and children, Roman dreamt of space, with her backyard astronomy club. She achieved her PhD at the University of Chicago in 1949, and became NASA's first chief of astronomy, and the first woman to hold an executive position there. She was a pioneer in the development of orbiting telescopes, such as the famous Hubble telescope, which allowed astronomers to view space passed the smoke screen that is the Earth's atmosphere.
